Pale Folklore is the debut studio album by PNW metal ghosts, Agalloch. The album blends elements of black metal, doom, and neofolk, creating a haunting and atmospheric soundscape. Tracks like the three-part suite “She Painted Fire Across the Skyline” and “The Melancholy Spirit” feature a mix of acoustic passages, distorted riffs, and varied vocal styles, including growled, clean, whispered, and shrieked vocals. The lyrical themes focus on depression, nature, folklore, and the supernatural, reflecting influences from the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest and Scandinavian music. At the time, the album seemed a bit of an anomaly, to me but hot damn if they haven’t become a serious cvlt act. Shows what I know. This album is absolute tits, and I mean it. Brilliant.
2023 deluxe German reissue from Eisenwald and it lives up to its deluxe status, without a doubt. Gorgeous.
