Lost Themes II builds on the eerie pulse of its predecessor, but with a slightly more expansive and confident feel—as Carpenter, his son Cody, and Daniel Davies have certainly settled into a deeper groove. The synths still loom like fog over deserted highways, but there’s more nuance in the textures and a stronger melodic presence throughout. Tracks like “Distant Dream” and “Angel’s Asylum” drip with noir tension and sci-fi dread, conjuring imaginary films that play out behind the eyes. Clearly, music is as much of John Carpenter’s creative passion as is his filmmaking, maybe more so, snd that is saying something. The man is a legend.
2016 US pressing from Sacred Bones Records.
