Journey’s self-titled debut is pretty different from the arena rock anthems they’d belt out a few years later. Instead, this is a prog-leaning fusion record steeped in instrumental workouts, jazzy detours, and a heavy Santana vibes due to both Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie had just left that band. Rolie handles vocals here, but the spotlight is clearly on Schon’s fiery guitar flights and the band’s tight, exploratory jams. A commercial disappointment, but musically, this record fucking moves.
1975 US pressing from Columbia. Sounds great. Sort of looks like the backdrop painting the band is shown on in the cover looks like it’s from the movie Forbidden Planet… like crazy similar.
