Look Into The Future finds Journey tightening their sound while still exploring the proggy, jazz-rock wanderings of their debut. The title track stretches out into a moody, spacious epic, but much of the album leans toward more structured songwriting, with clearer hooks and a slightly more melodic touch. Gregg Rolie still fronts the band with a bluesy, understated presence, and Neal Schon’s guitar work remains the standout, ranging from lyrical phrasing to scorching solos. It’s a transitional record—less jam-heavy than before, but still pretty engaging in a non-commercial kind of way. Honestly, a way better listen than you may be expecting. Take some time and and give this a spin. Even if it’s not your jam, you’ll be the better for having heard it.
1976 US pressing on Columbia. Cover is a little odd, but damn, it sounds good.
