Merci finds Magma veering sharply away from their signature zeuhl intensity into a mix of funk, soul, and gospel, with English and French lyrics overtaking Kobaïan. The album retains Christian Vander’s unmistakable rhythmic touch, but the cosmic dread is traded for slick grooves and vocal-driven arrangements. While the album left most of the band’s fanbase puzzled and confused, the album has a lovely warm sound and with the luxury of hindsight, isn’t as bad as it was made out to be at the time. To be fair, if I heard this back in my younger days I would have not enjoyed it, but nowadays I tend to be a bit more inquisitive about an artist’s intentions that I would have been at one time.
2015 French reissue from Jazz Village and it’s an absolutely perfect pressing.
