Pale Communion finds Opeth fully embracing their progressive rock leanings, with the metal largely dialed back in favor of lush Mellotron swells and vintage-sounding arrangements. It’s a natural evolution from Heritage, but perhaps a tad more cohesive with a clearer sense of direction. Seems like a lot of metal folks struggle with Opeth’s less metallic direction since Heritage, but I’m good with it. Solid album without a doubt, but probably one I hit less than some of their other works.
2014 US pressing from Roadrunner Records.
