Borboletta finds Santana diving deeper into the dreamy, fusion-heavy waters they’d been working towards with Caravanserai and Welcome. It’s a fluid, jazz-rock record that leans more into atmosphere and texture than hooks or riffs, with nods to Weather Report and Return to Forever. The vocals are sparse, and Carlos’s guitar often plays more like a voice than a lead instrument, soaring through misty, percussive soundscapes. I didn’t come across this record until later in life and not sure how much I would have appreciated it as a young metalhead, but it’s absolutely in my circle of interests these days, haha.
1974 US pressing on Columbia. Working person’s copy for certain but has held up beautifully.
