The Lost Tapes is a sprawling five-LP collection of previously unreleased material recorded between 1968 and 1977. Rather than a grab bag of castoffs, the set feels like an alternate history of the band—full of raw, exploratory sessions, film soundtrack work, and live jams that capture Can’s improvisational genius at full tilt. Highlights like “Millionenspiel” and “Deadly Doris” show off their knack for tension, groove, and abstraction, while the murkier cuts reveal just how fearless they were in pushing sonic boundaries. A fantastic deep dive into the unknown treasures of the vaults of Can! Honestly, anything I write here is an understatement of how truly extraordinary this collection really is. Beautiful.
2012 European pressing on Spoon Records. I stumbled across this box set at a local shop back in December 2024 and am just now plowing through it. So good.
