Maggot Brain is Funkadelic at its most haunting and psychedelic, kicked off with the raw emotion of Eddie Hazel’s legendary ten-minute guitar solo on the title track—a piece reportedly improvised while imagining his mother’s death. That opener alone is a funeral dirge beamed in from outer space, but the rest of the album drifts through acid-fried sermons, cosmic funk, and soul breakdowns. The album is both a eulogy and a revolution—melancholy, militant, and completely unhinged. Brilliant LP.
2014 European reissue from Westbound Records.
