The 1986 self-titled Misfits compilation, later to be known as “Collection I”, serves as a crash course in the band’s short but incendiary reign. Spanning their late ’70s and early ’80s singles and EPs, it’s packed with much of their most iconic material—“Die, Die My Darling,” “Astro Zombies,” “Night of the Living Dead,” and “Horror Business” among them. Though the sequencing is jumbled and the sources vary wildly in fidelity, the sheer consistency of the songwriting punches through. It’s a bit of a mess, but this album is alright.
2005 US reissue on Plan 9/Caroline Records.
