Steppenwolf (1968)

Steppenwolf’s self titled debut packs one helluva punch. The album is is often considered one of the first proto-metal albums and the band sort of coins the term in their mega hit “Born To Be Wild”. While all that might be true, what really hits it for me with Steppenwolf is their uniquely American swagger… heavy, a little downtrodden, but holy hell it’s heavy and it swings its fat ass around the room. The album kickoff “Sookie Sookie” delivers the goods right out of the gate. Criminally overlooked band that did way more than most people give them credit for. Crucial listening, honestly.

1968 US pressing on Dunhill/ABC Records. This copy is rough but it plays alright!
