Sunn O))) - ØØ Void (2000)

ØØ Void lays the groundwork for the Sunn O)))’s seismic, slow-motion approach to drone doom. The guitars—handled by Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley—are tuned earth-low and allowed to ring out into cavernous voids, constructing slabs of thick sonic waves rather than traditional riffs. There’s a ritualistic, almost meditative pull to the glacial pacing, with tones lingering so long they seem to fold back on themselves. I saw these guys play some years back and it was both awesome and a little painful as the the low frequency sound waves were so thick that they assaulted you body, wave after wave until you throat, next and back began to fatigue under the weight of the unprecedented heaviness . Love this album, but it’s a listening experience I have to be ready for.

2012 US reissue on Southern Lord with an alternate cover from the original CD.
