Van Der Graaf Generator - He To He Who Am The Only One (1970)

H To He Who Am The Only One finds Van Der Graaf Generator diving even deeper into existential dread and cosmic scale melodrama. The title cryptically references hydrogen fusion, but the record’s real fire comes from Peter Hammill’s tortured vocal performances and the tension between David Jackson’s shrieking saxophone and Hugh Banton’s baroque organ work. This album is a wild ride and it took me too long to get around to this early stuff to really get to the band’s best shit, but this… this is it!

1970 Netherlands pressing on Charisma with a funky blue base cover variant. It’s been around but sounds great.
