This bootleg release features Black Sabbath’s performance at California Jam, Ontario Speedway on April 6, 1974 (along with Deep Purple and Emerson, Lake & Palmer). This was both simulcast on ABC television at the time and on FM radio stations as well. My guess is that this is one of the recordings from an FM broadcast. Quality is a little meh, but the power of the performance overcomes any production shortcomings, and that’s saying a lot as this does not sound all that great. However, Sabbath is absolutely on fire and that comes through, making this absolutely worth checking out. On top of that, there’s a tune here called “Sometimes I’m Happy” which Sabbath would occasionally play live but never got recorded in the studio. Gems and history you fuckers!
2018 European pressing on a label called Coda Records and while it’s 100% not some ultra-rare Japanese edition, it’s a solid bootleg snapshot of Sabbath in 1974. Picked this up from the basement of Sister Rey in a London and I highly recommend a visit if you find yourself in London with some time to go hard.
