At some point Schenker decided he needed a more established and commanding frontman than Gary Barden, who is a solid singer, but more of a utility frontman than a dynamic focal point for the band. As a result, Graham Bonnet, formerly of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow was brought in for Assault Attack. Well, combined with Bonnet’s surprisingly formidable vocal performance and the studio expertise of producer/engineer Martin Birch this album sounds heavy as hell. Easily the beefiest MSG album ever made to my ears. While I’m not sure this release did much for Schenker’s commercial viability, it’s really fucking good.
1982 US pressing on Chrysalis and it sounds fantastic.
