Voïvod - Katorz (2006)

Following the Eric Forrest era, Voïvod essentially split up in 2001. However, not long after they reconnected with Snake and then brought in Jason Newsted who had only recently parted ways with Metallica and the band eventually released their self-titled comeback in 2003. While I was pretty stoked for this comeback , the self titled album did not usher in a new golden era and is a little… inconsistent.

While the band did get some significant coverage during this time, Piggy came down with serious colorectal cancer and passed away in 2005. However, and here’s what’s wild… before he passed away he literally recorded two albums worth of material on his own and dropped it on the band while on his death bed. Katorz is the first of two of the albums created from Piggy’s home recordings during this time. The band crafted this release with famed Canadian producer Glen Robinson, who also produced their breakthrough Nothingface LP. Not all of the songs here are awesome, but it’s way better than it should be and a fitting tribute to the man himself.

Not sure why I am even trying to tell this story, haha.

2006 US pressing on Infinite Vinyl/The End Records.
