Imaginos is a bit of a loaded topic in the world of Blue Öyster Cult. The concept was initially sparked by original drummer and songwriter Albert Bouchard, and the as had started working on it as a project around 1980, initially submitting it for release in 1984, only to have it rejected by Columbia. Years later and with numerous studio players involved (as well as heavy license taken by the band’s manager Sandy Pearlman), this version was acecepted and ultimately released in 1988. It didn’t do well commercially and Columbia ultimately dropped BÖC following the touring cycle for the album. Albert Bouchard also sued the band and the label for using his work and concepts without his permission or involvement and the band essentially went low-key for a decade or so following these developments. Not a great time. Still, the album itself is fascinating and while there’s some issues present, it sort of feels like some of the original ideas come do across… but hey! What do I know?!
1988 US pressing on Columbia. Sounds great. Sadly, this is the last of my Blue Öyster Cult record stash. Not against landing more of their stuff, but this is what I got so far.
