King Diamond - Fatal Portrait (1986)

Ah yes, Fatal Portrait is the debut album from King Diamond and his original solo band following the breakup of Mercyful Fate. While King Diamond himself would continue to evolve on his own this as a solo artist, Fatal Portrait very much feels like a continuation of Mercyful Fate, including MF guitarist Michael Denner and bassist Timi Hansen. The band also includes Andy LaRoque who would always remain as KD’s primary collaborator to this day. Last and certainly not least… master drummer Mikkey Dee, who is already fantastic, but who most folks know from his long tenure with Motörhead. Without hitting too much detail, the album itself is fantastic and displays and abundance of creativity on many levels. Got to see this band on lay in Seattle in 1986 as well 5with Megadeth as openers) and they were on fire. Still have the ticket stub!

2020 US reissue on Metal Blade Records and it’s excellent.
