I want to say Sepultura’s Roots album was initially a commercial breakthrough for the band, but I’m honestly not sure how well it actually sold overall and I’m not in the mood to look it up. I know that it is largely hated on by a lot of metalheads these days and while I don’t think it’s one of their best albums or anything, I do enjoy the incorporation of indigenous musical elements into the band’s sound, which unfortunately is also infused with a good deal of nu-metal slog. Parts of the album are a little cringe, but it’s also not nearly as bad as some of the stuff coming out at the time. The 90s were weird for metal. Sadly, the fracturing of the classic lineup begins here too..: with Max Cavalera’s departure sometime during the touring cycle for Roots and it puts the band’s future into question. Weird times indeed. I’ve already said too much. Come at me, haha!
2017 expanded US reissue on Roadrunner Records and it’s a nice one.
