Bleak House is Terje Rypdal’s debut solo album and it threw me off a bit think first time I heard it as the album is quite different from what Rypdal would be putting out just a few years later. Rypdal sings on this album for one, and there’s more of a blues rock and psychedelic feel mixed with jazz and event a large horn section, which is utilized sparingly. The album really is quite beautiful and still a bit haunting, which is a recurring vibe I get from most of Rypdal’s work. Absolutely worth digging into!
2025 Italian reissue on a label called Free Flow Archive and it’s quite nice. Found this new at Dusty Grooves in Chicago and knew I’d be buying it the second I saw it.
