Atomic Rooster - IV (1973)

Atomic Rooster IV is the US version of Nice ‘N’ Greasy and seems to share the same track listing as some of the EU versions, but definitely different than the original UK pressing, which swaps out “Moods” for “Goodby Planet Earth” as well as “What You Gonna Do” for “Satan’s Wheel”. On top of that, this is actually the fifth Atomic Rooster album, so the “IV” title is confusing as it’s only relevant to the US market since the first album wasn’t released in the US. But hey, this is a nice record! The band continues to lay back into the soulful blues sound they’ve been developing. Still a bit somber, shadows of darkness here and there, but otherwise beautiful tunes. This is also the last Atomic Rooster album of the 1970s. Vincent Crane was a brilliant and complex human and I suspect not an easy bandleader to work with.

1973 US pressing on Elektra. Plays nicely. I hope to land a proper UK pressing of Nice ‘N’ Greasy someday for the different tracks and cover as it’d be cool to have both.
