Soft Machine - At The Beginning (1972/1977)

As suggested by the title, this is a collection of the band’s early demos from April of 1967 and represents an early version of the band when Daevid Allen was still a part of the group. Allen would of course leave before the band’s debut, so it’s really nice to hear some material of this actual lineup. While the sleeve makes a lot of claims that this material was meant for a possible first album, memeber of the band have disputed the claim and say this was more or less recordings of the band working out ideas and nothing serious. I’m inclined to believe the band, but these shit is fucking cool.

Initially released under the title “Faces And Places Vol. 7” in 1972, this version was more widely released by Charly Records in 1977 and this is the German pressing of this particular edition. Sounds fantastic.
