As Celtic Frost faded into non-existence during the 1990s, Tom Warrior headed into a more industrial metal direction with Apollyon Sun… with Marky Marquis of Coroner, no less. While that band was decent, they were not of the same caliber as Celtic Frost. Tom and Martin reactivated Frost 2001-2002 and nearly took the band into some wild directions as evidenced by their 2002 Prototype demo album. Ultimately, they rediscovered their sound and the result is Monotheist, a massive album of heavy and esoteric doom metal and a nearly perfect comeback statement. The band toured heavily and were gaining a lot of momentum until they split up again at some point in 2008. Tom started a new band called Triptykon to continue (quite successfully) making music in the vein of what CF were doing with Monotheist. Martin Ain was fairly quiet but did participate in a band called Tar Pond, also with Marky Marquis, before Ain’s passing in 2017. With Ain no longer with us, Celtic Frost is truly done, but they left one hell of a legacy.
Side note: through some unexpected mutual connections, I was recruited by Celtic Frost’s official website team in 2005 to rebuild their site in preparation for the upcoming Monotheist campaign. As a result, I was able to get to work a lot CF’s very cool web team and Tom himself, who was somewhat involved in the aesthetics of how it all looked. Many good times and lots of stories from this era, but not my place to share here on my dumb blog.
2006 European first pressing from Century Media. Signed by Tom, Martin, and drummer Franco Sesa. The ticket stub was a gift from Tom from their comeback club show in Zurich.
