Vanity / Nemesis was the final proper studio album that Celtic Frost released before essentially splitting up in the early 1990s. The album is a partial reformation, with the notable return of Martin Ain, but the band had not quite ditched the L.A. look, except Ain, who never had that look in the first place. Popularity wise, I’m sort of perplexed by this period. The band was completely toast in all of the circles of folks I knew, but they did seem to get a lot of promotion for this tour and even released a home video. It’s a decent album, but still a little too poncy and a lot less avant-garde than what I look for in CF. A weird final statement (at the time) for such an incredible metal act.
1990 German pressing on Noise/EMI Electrola. I found this pristine copy in the basement of Sister Ray in London as recently as 2022 for only £25 and it was the first time I had ever seen an original of this on vinyl… of course I got it.
