Alice In Chains surely has one of the most fascinating arcs of PNW bands to emerge during the whole grunge scene of the late 80s and early 90s. Sadly, the band experience the tragic loss of Layne Staley to drug addiction which sidelined them in the heat of their ascendancy to rock stardom. Cantrell remained driven and continued to create high quality music in the years following AIC’s premature demise and eventually the band did reform with singer William DuVall, who amazingly has the uncanny ability to fit perfectly within a vocalist position that did not seem possible to fill. DuVall also has legitimate punk rock credentials having playing with one of my faves Bl’ast! and also the badass Neon Christ.
As I am clearly rambling here, Black Gives Way To Blue is an astonishing return for Alice On Chains. Soulful, authentic, heavy as fuck, and unmistakably AIC, this is a brilliant album. Much love.
2024 US reissue on Craft Recordings and it sounds amazing.
