Necronomicon - Tips Zum Selbstmord (1972)

Necronomicon was formed in 1970 and hailed from  Aachen, Germany. After a few lineup changes and some time refining their sound, they released their sole album Tips Zum Selbstmord (translates to “How To Commit Suicide”) in 1972. Despite the controversial title, the theme is less about individual self harm and more of a commentary on the state of the human race at the time. Musically, it’s heavy rock, but with lots of psychedelic and experimental nuances. Parts of the record are melodic and gentle, but there’s a chaotic edge that is ever present. I’ve had an mp3 rip of this for over 25 years and only recently came across this reissue. Certainly worth looking into if you’re interested in the German krautrock scene or non-typical heavy rock & proto-metal.

2023 US pressing from Guerssen and it sounds fantastic. The cover is multi-panel fold out sleeve displays the shape of a cross, which is a replica of the original’72 release. I wasn’t up for staging that photograph, so the fold-out image below is from Discogs, but this is what this copy looks like.
