Quick confession here… when Death’s debut came out in ‘87 I had some friends that were going nuts over it and I totally disregarded the album as a cheese-fest. I was an arrogant metal elitist asshole in the 1980s and got many things wrong, but this one stings. Today, I am a huge fan of Chuck Schuldiner’s body of work. Consequential is an an understatement. Yes, this early Death material is not outwardly sophisticated, but there is a lot of complexity going on once you dig into it. Raw, but an absolute masterwork if you give it a little time, and it only gets more interesting from here. Genius.
2916 US/CA/EU reissue from Relapse Records. Nice packaging and all but I’m a little uneasy with the vinyl mastering with this release. Feels a little sharp to me, but ok for now.
