Death - Symbolic (1995)

Seeing how most metal bands were really struggling in the 1990s, Death was experiencing a prolonged string of wildly groundbreaking and excellent albums. Symbolic finds Shuldiner and company further refining his progressive technical metal sound. I’d say Death was always solidly footed in death metal, but you can really Schuldiner’s interests in other types of music creeping in as the band’s sound continued to evolve. It would be fascinating to hear the type of music Chuck Schuldiner would be making today had he not passed away back in 2001. Clearly a musical visionary, on top of being a fantastic player and composer.

2014 US reissue on Metal Blade Records and it’s really nice.
