Gentle Giant - Free Hand (1975)

Gentle Giant go even more eclectic, or maybe eccentric with Free Hand. These appear to be zero guidelines on what this band will do into, but it always seems to fit right into what they are doing. Completely wild compositions and phenomenal playing throughout. Paradoxically accessible and challenging at the same time. Great album, but I probably wouldn’t start here if you’re just checking into these fellas. Don’t miss it though, just work your way to it.

1975 US pressing on Capitol Records. Many years ago at a record show I came across most of my Gentle Giant records all at once, for like $4-$5 each, and they were all in really good condition. I bought them expecting the band to be like King Crimson or something and was initially disappointed. Later on I revisited them and it all clicked, but it took a few years.
