Sepultura - Against (1998)

When Max Cavalera abruptly quit Sepultura in 1997, the band chose to move on and recruited American singer Derrick Green as a replacement. Max went on to form Soulfly and basically got really into the nu-metal movement and still, a large chunk of the fanbase shits on Sepultura. Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or what, but Sepultura’s post Max Cavalera era is way better than Max Cavalera’s post Sepultura era. I picked up Against on CD and found myself digging it a lot. It’s a very percussive album and Igor Cavalera’s playing here is fantastic. Kind of a weird vibe, but in a good way as far as I’m concerned. I personally like Max’s vocal a little better than Derrick Green’s vocal style, but this version of Sepultura seem unafraid of experimentation and should be appreciated as such. Yes, they have shit the bed a handful of times, but Against is not that. This album is waaay underrated.

2021 European reissue from BMG as part of the Sepulnation box set that covers the bands albums from 1998-2009. I found this for less than $100 when it came out and couldn’t pass it up. I’ll be working my way through most of the post-Max Cavalera albums here, starting with this box set.
