I Against I was sort of a big deal in my high school friend group when it came out in 1986. It had been three years since Rock For Light came out and it felt like a bit of a return, but the band had developed a really different songwriting approach for I Against I. Less of the duality of hardcore punk and reggae and a more modern sound that the visceral punk from a few years ago earlier. It’s an odd album, even by Bad Brains’ standards, but it’s become so woven into my personal musical journey that I’ll always have nothing but love for this record. Perhaps not as essential as Rock For Light, but hot damn it’s crucial for me.
Early US repress on SST with reversed labels. I got this used, also at Joint Custody in DC, and it looks a little weird under bright light, like someone tried to clean it with something awful, but it plays perfectly. I’ve run it through my ultrasonic cleaner a few times and it seems to be helping make it look better and it sound perfect as a side effect? Hah!
